ARADA has selected Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) to design the Central Hub, which will serve as the centerpiece of Aljada, the developer’s famed project in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. This decision was made after going through an international competition. The proposal conceptualizes the moment a water droplet strikes the surface of the earth. This moment is captured in a variety of elliptical buildings that are designed to channel the prevailing winds into civic spaces and courtyards in order to facilitate cooling during the summer months. The proposal was developed with environmental considerations integrated throughout the masterplan in order to minimize the consumption of resources. A dynamic public area with water features that are watered by recovered and recycled water surrounds the central observation tower, which is located in the middle of the city. In order to maintain a microclimate at ground level, tensile canopies are used to create green gardens that include plants that are local to the area. HE “Zaha Hadid Architects is worldwide acclaimed for forward-thinking and revolutionary urban design,” remarked Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, as the Chairman of the Architectural Research and Development Association (ARAD). The integrated design approach that Zaha Hadid Architects used was the one that best suited our vision for Aljada’s Central Hub as a linked destination. This is despite the fact that all of the businesses who participated in this design competition delivered great concepts. This strategy is congruent with ARADA’s purpose to construct communities that are gratifying and engaging, therefore developing the Sharjah of the future and achieving its goals. The center of the AED24 billion Aljada mixed-use complex, the 1.9 million square foot Central Hub will be a new focus for the UAE and a major addition to Sharjah, renowned as the cultural capital of the Arab world. The Central Hub of Aljada will be a key attraction for both residents and visitors, providing amenities of world-class quality in addition to community services, retail establishments, and eating establishments. In order to fulfill ARADA’s mission of constructing environmentally friendly urban environments, the Central Hub’s design will incorporate the utilization of treated wastewater for irrigation purposes. Additionally, the architecture will incorporate both active and passive measures to reduce the amount of cooling that is required inside the building. The first phase of the Central Hub will create a lively, family-friendly destination with a series of attractions and activities for residents of Sharjah to enjoy throughout the year at the Aljada site. These attractions and activities will include an adventure activity zone, a food market showcasing home-grown delicacies, and outdoor event spaces. Located in the center of Sharjah, Aljada offers outstanding connection to the regions that are located in the surrounding districts. Walkability and expansive green areas are taken into consideration throughout the design process of the masterplan, which makes it possible for residents, workers, and tourists to live, work, and play within a community that is completely integrated and sustainable. The residential complex that spans 24 million square feet and was launched at the beginning of September 2017 has become Sharjah’s most rapidly selling residential development. There is an expectation that the whole project will be finished by the year 2025, and it will be delivered in stages starting in 2019. You may see the renderings on the website indiaartndesign.com.
