At the Architect Show in Japan, a compositional masterpiece is designed. It is a dwelling that plays a sculptural function in the growing rural region of Isahaya city, Nagasaki, while a simple abode is waiting for the family inside… With its four distinct masses—two of which are thin and have flat roofs, and the other two of which are bold and have slanting eaves and walls—the mansion is a remarkable architectural building that shines out in the tranquil country setting. The masses are staggered in elevation and design, with each one seamlessly complimenting the other. The finishes offer a level of play, with contrasting and striking finishes, such as rough black and red wood, which juxtapose with the stark white walls. The front facade is punctuated with a combination of minimal apertures that are elegant and in harmony with the overall composition. On the other hand, the rear facade has a vertical louvered facade that allows light to permeate the home. Onto entering, one is greeted by an abundance of skylight that falls upon a court with plantation and penetrates the areas of the house. This creates a contrasting atmosphere that takes over once one is inside. Both the living and eating areas are onto a patio that is illuminated by the stars. There is a play of light that is introduced by the terrace balcony, which is shielded around the edge by wooden verticals. This balcony also provides a location for private events. Although the more private areas of the house, such as the master bedroom, the bedrooms for the children, and the bathrooms on the upper level, are provided with adequate diffused skylight from the courtyard, which ensures privacy and security, the wooden verticals that form the outer boundary wall shower the space with ample natural light, casting interesting chiaroscuro elements across the spaces. At the same time as it gives the impression that the house is more open, the harmonic composition of semi-open and constructed with pockets of green creates places that are comfortable. The living room is filled with exquisite furnishings, and channels in the ceiling provide ambient lighting for both the living and eating areas. The sloping ceiling and wooden verticals, all of which are finished in red cedar, provide a sense of drama to the living space. The bedrooms and baths, which are designed to be adequately warm, are completed in a blend of delicate and dark colors, and the lighting is kept to a minimum in order to create pleasant areas. The house satisfies the family’s criteria for a home that is both exquisite and modest, and the completed building is a testament to iconic architecture in its surroundings.
