An example of a tautological name is Mount Maunganui in New Zealand, which literally translates to “mount great mountain.” Other tautological names include Mount Fujiyama and the River Avon. Everyone just refers to it as the mount, even though the official name for it is meant to be mauao, but no one can really utter that term. To be honest, it’s more of a large hill than a mountain for the most part. The view from this vantage point near the tip of the peninsula, which looks out over Tauranga Harbour on one side and the Bay of Plenty on the other, is rather picturesque. In less than two hours, you can make your way up and down it, and there are numerous paths that cater to different levels of fitness among the population. The waves slamming against the rocks are a fascinating sight to see, and there is even a road that runs around the base, which makes for a really beautiful stroll indeed. There are sheep that wander around the peak, and there are a number of birds that flit through the trees on each side of the trails, but the vistas are the reason why you trek up (and around) the summit. The golden beach, the crystal-blue sea, the green slopes, the red trees, the multicolored rocks, the golden sand, and the city extending down the sandbank are all things that may be seen on a bright day when the pohutukawa are in bloom. A hat and a bottle of water are two items that you really need to bring with you while you are climbing the mountain. During the summer, the track may get quite dusty. In addition, you should bring a camera with you since the view of Matakana Island from the summit is one that you will most certainly want to capture on video. Additionally, the name of the community that is located at the base of the mountain, close to the city of Tauranga, is also known as Mount Maunganui. It is a very upscale location that is packed with penthouses. To a large extent, it is the most prestigious beach resort in all of New Zealand. There are a number of exciting activities that you can arrange from that location, such as paragliding, jet skiing, kayaking, and swimming with dolphins. Additionally, there is some great shopping and dining that you can do there. The fact that Mount Maunganui is home to two distinct kinds of beaches is what sets it apart from other beaches. The tauranga is linked to the mount by a stretch of land that is very long and very narrow. One side of the harbor is pilot bay, which serves as the entry to tauranga harbor. The water in this area is tranquil and resembles a lake. The water is perfect for paddling about in a kayak peacefully or swimming in with little children. A surfing beach may be found on the other side. It is also a wonderful place to swim, although you must use caution while doing so. On the side of surfing, there is a lot more active activity. In the summer, there are a lot of people, both residents and visitors, sunbathing there. The two beaches are about a minute’s walk away from one another when they are located at the foot of the mountain. The fact that there is a vacation park right at the base of the mountain is a wonderful feature. This park has restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, restaurants, and grills. Because it is so popular, you are need to make a reservation. There is a family that I know that lives in Tauranga and they still drive their campervan up the Mount every year, as if they didn’t already reside in close proximity to the mountain area! A group of hot pools equipped with salt water may be found directly adjacent to the campground for campers. Among the sea water pools in New Zealand, these are the only ones that are naturally heated. I really like visiting there with my mother. It is possible to receive massages there, although we have never tried it. You are properly “massaged” by the enormous jets that are located in the center pool, and when I say “massaged,” I mean “pummelled”! Mount Maunganui is, without a shadow of a doubt, the ideal place to spend your vacation in New Zealand, particularly if you are traveling by campervan.
